GETTING STARTED / GUIDE 01

Installation & your first storefront

Upload, configure and safely launch your Kiln theme with Online Store 2.0.

8 min read • Kiln v1.2.0

01Before you begin

Make a duplicate of your published theme in Online Store → Themes → … → Duplicate. Record the apps, custom code, navigation, markets and product templates you currently use. Theme-specific settings do not automatically transfer between different themes.

  1. Confirm you have permission to manage themes and edit products.
  2. Export a copy of the current theme and save a dated backup.
  3. Prepare product images, collection descriptions, brand fonts and logo assets.

This website is an interactive Next.js showcase. Theme ZIPs and trial installations are provided through an approved Shopify Theme Store listing, not downloaded from this site.

02Install a theme trial or licensed theme

On the official Shopify Theme Store, choose the approved Kiln listing and select Try theme. Sign in to your store to add an unpublished trial. If you already own a licensed archive, use Online Store → Themes → Import theme → Upload ZIP file. Keep the archive intact; do not upload an unzipped folder.

  1. Open the unpublished theme’s Customise action.
  2. Select the preset closest to your intended design. Applying a new preset can replace theme settings, so save a duplicate first.
  3. Set your logo, colour scheme, heading scale and social links.
  4. Assign your primary and footer menus in the header and footer section settings.

03Build with sections and templates

Start with the homepage hero and featured collection, then add trust, editorial and product sections. Use the template selector to create a product template for a bundle, a collection template for a specific range, or a content page template. Assign templates to the relevant resource in Shopify admin.

  1. Keep one primary heading and a clear call to action on each page.
  2. Use image aspect-ratio settings to reserve space before images load.
  3. Connect product metafields as dynamic sources where supported.
  4. Review desktop and mobile layouts using the editor’s viewport controls.

04Preview and launch

Use the theme preview link to test your store on actual devices. Review product variants, sold-out states, search, filters, cart changes, discounts, shipping messages and checkout. Test each active language and currency. Publish only when payment, tax, shipping and fulfilment settings are ready.

  1. Check legal policies, contact information and consent settings.
  2. Audit keyboard focus, image alternatives and contrast after styling.
  3. Remove redundant app embeds from the new theme; cancel paid subscriptions separately in Shopify admin.
  4. Publish the licensed theme, then monitor real-user performance and conversion.

Publishing a theme does not migrate bespoke Liquid code or automatically cancel app subscriptions.
