Seamless theme updates
Move between versions safely while keeping settings and customisations reviewable.
01Make an update inventory
Before updating, review the changelog and identify your installed version in the theme information panel. Make a duplicate of the current published theme and download a backup. List manual code edits, custom sections, app embeds and external integrations so they can be retested.
- Record the published theme name, version and date.
- Export important settings and note custom template assignments.
- Copy any bespoke code into a version-controlled repository.
- Keep a preview URL for the current version for side-by-side checks.
02Add the update as an unpublished theme
Use Shopify’s available theme update action for your licensed Theme Store theme. Supported settings and compatible customisations may be transferred by Shopify, but conflicts and manual edits can require intervention. Never assume a one-click update preserves every custom change.
- Add the new version to the theme library without replacing the live theme.
- Review any Shopify notices about changes that could not be copied.
- Reapply custom code in small, documented patches.
- Compare JSON templates, section settings and metafield bindings.
03Run regression checks
Test representative products with variants, quantity breaks, bundles, subscriptions and out-of-stock states. Verify cart rewards, gift removal, discount combinations, search, filters, account links, languages and currencies. Use real devices and a keyboard, not only the theme editor preview.
- Review app blocks and embeds for duplicate scripts or missing configuration.
- Check desktop and mobile screenshots for spacing and image crops.
- Run performance and accessibility checks against the updated preview.
- Place a test order using an approved Shopify test payment method.
04Publish with a rollback path
Publish at a low-traffic time after all checks pass. Retain the previous theme in the library with a clear version label. Monitor error reports, checkout entry and performance after publishing. If there is a critical regression, republish the previous version and open a support ticket with reproducible steps, the affected URL and both version numbers.
Theme publication does not roll back catalogue edits, discount changes, app subscriptions or checkout settings. Track those changes separately.
